ʻIolani Palace in Honolulu was completed in 1882 under King Kalākaua and served as the official residence of Hawaii’s final monarchs, Kalākaua and Queen Liliʻuokalani. The palace was remarkably modern for its time, featuring electric lighting and telephones before many prominent buildings elsewhere. After the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown in 1893, it became a government building, and Queen Liliʻuokalani was imprisoned there in 1895. Following decades of restoration, ʻIolani Palace reopened as a museum and remains an important symbol of Hawaiian history, culture, and sovereignty.
